Driftwood

Abandoned ignored
all Summer
An amputated tree
washed ashore
in the ice age
of last Winter
Trapped on shore
ant laden rotting
chipped white weathered
Waiting to be cut up
burned
So big to move
Taking up space
like a beached whale
quiet expressionless
Letting the next stage
just happen

– Joan Kehoe
